Coffee may contain an ingredient that protects the liver against alcoholic cirrhosis, new information shows.The study, published inside the Archives of Internal Medicine, implies that among more than 125,000 people studied for about 22 years, coffee-drinkers were less likely to be informed they have alcoholic cirrhosis. "These data secure the hypothesis that there is an ingredient in coffee that protects against cirrhosis, especially alcoholic cirrhosis," the researchers write. None had been recently diagnosed with liver problems.Most participants noted drinking light or moderate amounts of alcohol (up to two daily drinks). Only 8 percent admitted drinking several alcoholic drinks every day. Typical coffee consumption was 1-3 daily cups, noted by 42 percent with the group. Another 16 percent reported drinking four or more daily cups of coffee.Alcoholic Cirrhosis Rarer Over time, 330 participants were clinically determined to have cirrhosis; 199 of those cases were alcoholic cirrhosis. The residual cases of cirrhosis were nonalcohol related.For each and every daily cup of coffee that participants reported drinking, we were holding 22 percent less likely to have been diagnosed with alcoholic cirrhosis in the study, Klatzky's team reports.The percentages of developing nonalcoholic cirrhosis weren't associated with coffee consumption. Coffee drinkers were also less likely to have high blood levels of liver enzymes. That pattern was strongest in individuals with the highest reported alcohol consumption. Participants only took the survey once — when the study started. So the data don't include modifications in coffee or consumption of alcohol.People don't always report their drinking habits accurately, note Klatzky and colleagues, adding that participants' alcohol consumption is "relatively stable."Was It the Caffeine?Klatzky's team didn't identify what ingredient in coffee will help protect the liver from alcoholic cirrhosis. Caffeine might not get the credit. Tea contains caffeine, but tea consumption didn't may actually lower participants' odds of being identified as having any form of cirrhosis.Past studies on caffeine and alcoholic cirrhosis haven't reached any firm conclusions, note Klatzky and colleagues. "In our thoughts this issue is quite unresolved," they write, adding that coffee fans were more common than tea drinkers inside their study.As an observational study, the analysis doesn't prove that drinking coffee cuts the possibility of developing alcoholic cirrhoses, the researchers caution. Armed men opened fire Wednesday on Turkish police guarding top entrance to the U.S. consulate in Istanbul, killing three policemen with what Turkish and U.S. officials called a terrorist attack.
