Vice President Dick Cheney, accompanied by former President George H.W. Bush and former Secretary of State Colin Powell, paid respects Friday to new Saudi King Abdullah and offered condolences around the death of his half brother, the first kind king.Fahd died on Monday after 23 years rule in the strategic Gulf state that is both world's biggest oil exporter as well as the cradle of Islam.Reporters in the capital, Riyadh, were barred access to the American delegation, which was to have an audience using the new king after Friday prayers from the deeply conservative desert kingdom.Oil-rich Saudi Arabia is really a major U.S. ally in the centre East, and Abdullah has worked to correct ties strained by the Sept. 11 attacks, in which 15 of the attackers were Saudis. The Bush family members have had close ties with the Saudi leadership for decades.CBS News reports that Cheney planned to own lunch Friday with Abdullah.Earlier this week, before former King Fahd's funeral ceremony, Abdullah received Britain's Prince Charles and other Western dignitaries. Abdullah, dressed in white robes and headdress and cream-colored cloak, sat communicating with Charles, who expressed his condolences for that death of King Fahd and the congratulations for Abdullah's ascension to the throne. Prince Bandar, the first kind Saudi ambassador to Washington, sat nearby translating. The Saudi monarch also met Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf, the Swiss president along with other Western dignitaries, who had been unable to attend funeral ceremonies per day earlier for Fahd, which were closed to non-Muslims along with all women.Abdullah had served as de facto leader for a decade after King Fahd suffered a debilitating stroke. Top clerics Friday called on Saudis to join others in expressing their "bayah," or oath of allegiance, to Abdullah, which they said was every Muslim's religious duty.Thousands of Saudis — tribal chiefs, Islamic clerics, army commanders and commoners — happen to be pouring into the governor's palace here to pledge loyalty to Abdullah, vowing to "hear and obey" in the traditional Islamic ceremony sealing his status as monarch.Sheikh Abdul Rahman al-Seedes, the imam from the Grand Mosque in Mecca, went as far as to compare swearing allegiance to the new king on the oath taken by Muslims to their prophet Muhammad some 14 centuries ago."I urge all Muslims to look at bayah because it is part of the creed and a religious duty," he explained in a sermon broadcast live on Saudi television.Al-Seedes said those who do not take the oath would go to their graves as non-Muslims.Sheikh Abdul Mohsen al-Obeigan, a cleric who is close to the royal family, even called on women to accept the oath, an unusual request since Islamic traditions make expressions of allegiance the job only of men. A judge has rejected a plea provide which a former teacher would've avoided prison time for having sex having a 14-year-old student, prosecutors said.Debra Lafave walked into a Florida court expecting the judge to rubber stamp the plea agreement she made with prosecutors last month, CBS News correspondent Jim Acosta reports. But the judge had other plans.Lafave left the courthouse in tears.Under a legal contract reached last month, Lafave, 25, would've been sentenced to three years of house arrest and 7 years' probation after pleading guilty to 2 counts of lewd and lascivious battery. Had she been found guilty of the charges at trial, she may have been sentenced to 30 years in prison. The agreement was intended to resolve charges in two counties, but the court in one of the counties balked, Ric Ridgeway, a spokesman for that State Attorney's Office, said Thursday.Judge Hale Stancil set an April trial date, but Ridgeway said the attorneys will be back before the judge once you get your deal by then. He didn't say what are the judge's concerns were, only that he wanted changes.Legal analyst Wendy Murphy thinks public outcry turned the tide."A lot of people were angry," Murphy said. "The voice from the community is supposed to matter when judges give out sentences in criminal cases."And individuals this Florida community are demanding that teacher get more than what comes down to detention after class, reports Acosta. Her ex-husband is arguing for difficult time."I think a year to two numerous years of jail time in conjunction with some intense psychiatric help," said Owen Lafave. The outstanding charges against Lafave claim she'd sex with the boy in a sport utility vehicle while his 15-year-old cousin drove.Defense attorney John Fitzgibbons said the judge indicated he planned to hear expert information about a trial's potential influence on the two boys.Last month, Hillsborough Circuit Judge Wayne Timmerman said LaFave, whose sexual liaisons made tabloid headlines, will forever lose her teaching certificate, must register with all the state as a sexual predator, may not have any contact with children such as victim. He also said she will stop allowed to profit from the sale of her story or personal appearances. tall uggs on sale While researchers have known that obesity among children has risen in recent years, a study published in the Journal of Pediatrics finds that American kids have higher high blood pressure as well. CBS News Health Correspondent Dr. Emily Senay reports.Scientists in the University of Minnesota studied 18,000 kids ages 10 through 14 from the Minneapolis public school system. They tested them in 1986, however , 10 years later. They discovered that kids in 1996 were heavier, as measured by themselves mass index, or BMI, a step of weight and height. Children's BMIs rose from 19.7 to 20.5 in males, and from 20.3 to 21.2 in females.Researchers also discovered that the kids' systolic blood pressure levels - the first number recorded once your blood pressure is taken - had also risen from 106.3 to 107.8 of males and from 105.6 to 106.3 in females. The rise was recorded in every ethnic groups, but most significantly in whites, African Americans, and male Hispanics. But children do not have high blood pressure, Dr. Senay says. They have got higher blood pressure levels than their peers of 10 years ago. However, since the best predictor of future blood pressure levels is current blood pressure, researchers fear more and more adults will have cardiovascular problems later on.Since higher blood pressure is correlated to improve weight, the best thing parents are able to do is keep their children's weight in order. That means the old tried-and-true technique of eating less and exercising more.Reported By Dr. Emily Senay
Two spacewalking astronauts unpacked the International Space Station's new radiator early Friday and started on a series of fix-it tasks while they floated high over the Indian Ocean. The radiator will be a key part of the space station's solar technology arrays, dissipating the heat generated by the solar panels' electronics.Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper and Joe Tanner had started investing in the $372 million solar panel addition for the space station in their first spacewalk, as well as on Friday were wrapping up the next and final outing of Atlantis' 11-day mission. It had been the first construction mission to space station since the 2003 Columbia disaster.A glitch delayed the spacewalkers Friday morning, however it was fixed after about Forty-five minutes. With launch restraints removed, flight controllers sent commands to unfold a 44-foot-long radiator panel on the space station that will help keep the electronics inside a new solar array module cool once referring on line, reported CBS News space consultant Bill Harwood."You just cannot imagine a flight going along with this one has gone," said lead space station flight director John McCullough. "I couldn't demand a better start — a re-start — to assembly."The astronauts were already well in front of schedule by Friday. An hour or two into their spacewalk, Tanner and Stefanyshyn-Piper picked up a science experiment that tested how various materials fare in space and set to work on some installation tasks. They are going to spend the rest of the roughly 6 1/2 hours on tasks like replacing an antenna. no previous page next 1/2 bailey button ugg boots sale Divers who scoured the sea bottom Sunday of a mile off Aruba came up empty, as the search for Alabama teen Natalee Holloway continued, reports CBS News correspondent Kelly Cobiella. The undersea effort was prompted by the claim from a volunteer searcher that his radar had detected human bones, Cobiella says.On land, the probe of Holloway's disappearance some three months ago resulted in round two for Surinamese brothers Deepak and Satish Kalpoe, who had been questioned for several hours Saturday, and again on Sunday.Prosecutors claim they've got new evidence against them, and arrested them on suspicion of rape and murder early Friday morning. They'd been held earlier in the investigation. One of their attorneys says he's seen nothing."They haven't shown us any evidence," asserts Elgin Zeppenveldt, a legal professional for Satish.Asked if that's normal, he responded, "No, it is not normal. Only in Aruba can it be normal."A fourth man also has entered the picture, Cobiella says.Freddy Zedan Arambatzis, a detailed friend of Joran van der Sloot's, was also arrested Friday. He calls himself "Locoman Pimp" on his Web site, and is a familiar face in pictures of van der Sloot and also the Kalpoes.Van der Sloot had been the only suspect being detained in the event that until the latest arrests of the Kalpoe brothers. However, prosecutors aren't saying whether Arambatzis is being held in connection with the Holloway investigation.Holloway's mother, Beth Twitty, and stepfather, George "Jug" Twitty, found out about the arrests while in your own home in Birmingham, Ala."Beth and I are incredibly, very happy because that's what we would have liked and, I mean, they have, they have got some answers," according to him."And you know Jug and I and several other family members, we felt ahead of time, as early as May 31, why these boys (the Kalpoes) should have, needs to have been arrested then on that day," she added.Meanwhile, the legal clock is ticking for van der Sloot, Cobiella says. He could be released as early as this week.Prosecutors have until Sunday either to charge him or persuade the court to hold him for another Four weeks.
With another dangerously hot day breaking over the country's midsection, indoors was among the safest places to be: Inside, with all the air conditioning and fans blasting. But regardless of the giant fan and ice packs, Madalyn Lynch's boxer was still being panting, drooling and not obeying commands from the exhibition ring at a 4-H dog show in northern Ohio."When he's meant to sit, he just lays down," said Lynch, 18, who braved the scorching temperatures along with her dog, Courtley, to attend the Seneca County Fair in Tiffin on Monday. "It's hard for him."As a large swath of the U.S. suffered through another miserably hot day, people cranked up their air conditioners, headed to swimming pools and ran through sprinklers to stay cool.Temperatures soared past 100 in numerous cities, and the National Weather Service posted excessive heat warnings and advisories from Illinois to Louisiana and from Nebraska on the District of Columbia. Some areas weren't anticipated to receive a break until Wednesday."It's like getting yourself into a sauna. The humidity is a new thing," said Barbara King, 26, of Aberdeen, Scotland, who had been vacationing in Chattanooga, Tenn. When air conditioning units break down in this heat wave, though, reports CBS News' Peter Combs in Charlotte, technicians like David Dupuy need to crawl into hot attics to repair them."They're pushing probably 130 on the websites for, it's hot," Dupuy said. "We've had a couple that suffered heat stroke already." The blistering heat has caused numerous deaths this summer. Within the Phoenix area alone, 24 people, most of them homeless, have died.Police there was hitting the streets in many cities, reports CBS News Correspondent Kelly Cobiella, offering water, and checking for the hum of the running air conditioner.Keeping an eye on the aged is priority number one, says Lt. Ricky Collins with the Pine Lawn, Mo., police department."What's the for the worst situation scenario in heat similar to this? Finding them overheated and dead," Collins said.At least four deaths have been blamed on the warmth in Missouri, including a woman found dead Sunday in the house without air conditioning. no previous page next 1/3 official ugg boots In this age of multiple marriages and quick divorce, psychologist Kevin Leman offers many ways on staying married on CBS News This Morning. Leman's latest book is Sex Begins with the cooking. --Advertisement-- Sex Begins in the Kitchen "Mom is driving home as well as a sudden it's 10:20 in the evening....She remembers the dishes," Leman begins in explanation of his book's title. "The kitchen was a mess. She walks into her house, finds a clear, sparkling kitchen, flips [out], checks the amount on the house. She's at the right address," he continues."[She] comes home in to find her husband putting away the dish towels. Sex begins with the cooking," Leman says, explaining that they is so overjoyed by her husband's diligence that it enhances their relationship. Leman found after 10 years of marriage that sex has not been the most important thing to his wife, because it was to him. The couple has now been married 32 years. The average marriage lasts seven years, he notes. He says research shows women put sex 14th in importance, after No. 13, gardening. Clearly, males and females view their sex life completely differently. The most important mistake in his opinion is that spouses don't know how to communicate."Men tend to be a lot more direct in their communication. Women dance around a little," he says.Leman ranks as a way the three basic needs of females and men in marriage: Basic Needs by Gender .WOMEN MEN1. affectionsexual fulfillment2. honesty and opennessrespect3. resolve for familyneed to feel neededSource: Sex Begins with the food prep , Kevin LemanWhat men want is sexual fulfillment. "Not sex, they really want respect. And they need to feel needed," Leman says. From men, women want affection as well as openness and honesty, Leman says. But he adds that most men are not good at it. "Men love arm's length relationships," he says.Leman gives marriage seminars across the nation. He says most men desire to please their wives; they only need to be told how to make it happen and their wives are the ones who need to tell them."If you get good at getting behind your wife's eyes to see how she sees life, you can learn to understand women," he states. ©1999 CBS Worldwide Inc. A stomachache is enough to send some people towards the doctor, but in many cases that pain in the belly is nothing more the indigestion. The newest issue of Health magazine has suggestions about sorting out medical quirks from quandaries. Robin Vitetta Miller, a contributor to the magazine, explains that more individuals are self-diagnosing and self-treating medical problems because of better access to medical news and information. But, he warns, just a doctor can make a true diagnosis.Listed below are symptoms that Miller says may be serious, but often aren't:Throbbing HeadA hard day with the kids or on the job gives a lot of people a headache. In most cases, you have nothing to concern yourself with. But make an appointment with your doctor in the event the pain keeps you up during the night, makes your stomach queasy or makes you see flashing lights.Foggy VisionNot being able to see properly can make people very nervous. If it is something that's happened as time passes, the solution could be as simple as new glasses. However, if it happens suddenly, it could signal a life threatening problem such as a detached retina. Red EyesIf the redness with your eyes only lasts per day you probably have nothing to worry about. However, for those who have eyes that are persistently red, call your doctor. You could have any number of conditions range from pink eye to some scratched cornea that can lead to permanent vision loss if not treated properly.Racing HeartIf a racing heart coincides which has a big event, such as landing a big account at your job, then you are just excited. See a doctor should your heart races for more than a few minutes or if your speeding heart is accompanied by dizziness or shortness of breath.CrampsMany women have cramps when they are having their period and frequently acetaminophen or ibuprofen gets rid of this. But if a woman is feeling cramps during the rest of the month, something more serious may be going on. Possibilities include fibroids, endometriosis or pelvic inflammatory disease. Call an ambulance if your pain is so strong you are unable to breathe properly or walk.Lower Back PainNearly everyone experiences lower back pain. Generally it's caused by simple overuse. Rest, a little ice and a painkiller usually fixes the ache. Call a doctor if the pain is persistent and combined with weight loss or if the pain is shooting. You can have something more serious wrong say for example a disk injury. ugg and jimmy choo The world's air traffic control system, built around aging radar technology, is stretched for the breaking point every day reports CBS News Aviation Correspondent Bob Orr. Mix in bad weather and delays quickly snowball."There's huge amount of money, tens of millions of dollars lost with passengers and air cargo located on the ramp waiting for a slot to buy the system," says Ronald Wickens of Federal Express. That's why governments are urgently looking for ways to reduce delays. CBS News was invited aboard a FedEX plane in Memphis for any test of a high-tech landing system that utilizes satellites to precisely guide planes every which way and in all types of weather to the runway. "With this accuracy we can stack up airplanes closer together, increasing aircraft capacity," Wickens explains. In Europe, controllers work on another concept meant to shorten flights between cities. Right this moment, planes over Europe fly circuitous routes in established aerial lanes between navigational points. Under what is called "free route," jets would fly from point to point, avoiding congested air lanes. "The consequence of this is you have a wider spreading of the traffic and fewer conflict points," says Jose Santos of Eurocontrol. "And this to your view will increase the air space capacity."And within the U.S. principals are underway on a system called "free flight," where pilots could choose their own routes all the way from takeoff to landing. Gps satellites and crash avoidance equipment could be used to maintain safety whilst planes properly spaced.U.S. controllers and pilots are already testing one part of free flight, using email as an alternative to radios to communicate. "It helps reduce some of the misunderstandings in voice communications, in which you get an actual written message appearing on the computer screen in the cockpit as well as the same for a controller within a response from the pilot," says Randy Schwitz from the National Air Traffic Controllers Association. The modifications could take a decade to implement and you will be expensive. Millions of dollars will be required to equip airplanes, airports and control centers. But, with no air traffic control overhaul, delays will mount and billions more is going to be lost to gridlock. ©2000, CBS Worldwide Inc., All Rights Reserved
Try not to hold your breath. To begin with, I doubt an ax murderer fleeing what the law states would list his number in the phone book. Secondly, it's been my experience that a lot of people in this country are good (or anyway, well intentioned). UGG Tall Boots Black Dr. Meyerowitz says most guys are under the misconception that growing older means getting shorter, but he stresses you need to lose no more than one half inch to three-quarters inch from your height as a young adult. Any more probably means osteoporosis.
