But now there is real hope for Marion and for millions of others, reports CBS News Correspondent Jeffrey Kofman.A team of British researchers is in Philadelphia this week, to announce what seems to be a major advance in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis -- the first evidence of a safe and effective cure.The scientists believe they've finally discovered what causes rheumatism: so-called B-cells, or white blood cells that accidentally attack healthy tissues.In tests, one particular treatment with the new drug wipes your destructive B cells.Prof. Jonathan Edwards of University College working in london say says the drugs have caused "differences so large, something very dramatic is being conducted."Researchers have treated twenty patients so far. Some have had rheumatoid arthritis for over twenty years. Most have been able to return to normal lives. Only two saw no benefit at all.Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common form of the disease. It affects greater than two million Americans, most of whom are women.Dr. John Klippel, with the Arthritis Foundation, has seen the analysis and he is excited.He says, "What's being described here's significant improvement that we really don't see with any of the other available therapies."Doctors caution it'll be five years before the drugs are the marketplace -- but they say this could mark the starting of the end for a debilitating disease.

"Both parties have pledged to get it done " but neither party is producing, he admits that.Democrats like Rockefeller want drug benefits to be a part of Medicare. Republicans say that's too costly. President Bush wanted to funnel block grants for the states, but the Republican chairman of your key committee says even Mr. Bush knows his program will not work. "He knows it's not a satisfactory program," says US Senator Chuck Grassley (Republican, Indiana). "That's why he said it's just a start of a 4-year effort to reform Medicare."Grassley says he can try to write his own prescription in making drug benefits part of Medicare, though so many issues before Congress, the matter could be pushed aside until next season. Grassley says he's worried about what's going to happen if the matter is delayed until next season. "It's a hot political item and Congress is reluctant to take up hot political pieces of an election year, also it goes until the year 2003."Grassley says he believes it is possible to pass legislation this fall. Rockefeller is not so sure. He didn't mention the reactor cited by Hill.The nuclear standoff erupted at the end of 2002 after Washington said North Korea admitted managing a secret nuclear program in violation of a 1994 agreement to give up nuclear development. Pyongyang later withdrew in the international Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. But his neighbor said he kept the animals alive and let them loose somewhere else."He couldn't even kill a chipmunk. He was that kind of individual," said Gene Herrmann, who lived next door to Ratzmann for about 30 years.Ratzmann arrived at the service late on Saturday, equipped with a handgun, and opened fire. His victims included the pastor and his awesome teenage son.Chandra Frazier, who was at the service, said the gunman started shooting after that it began, and that he even stopped to reload.She said she was near a "family he mowed down.""It was mayhem," she told reporters away from hotel. "I dove under a chair, the man whose chair I dove under died. I'm asking myself why are we still alive."Ratzmann was described by neighbors as quiet and devout.He liked to tinker about his house and garden, said Shane Colwell, another neighbor isn't Ratzmann for about a decade.Ratzmann lived with his mother and sister inside a modest, two-story brown home a couple of miles from the suburban Milwaukee hotel where police say he opened fire during a service of the Living Church of God. Police were interviewing them on Sunday.Ratzmann went to church every Saturday, Colwell said."He wasn't a dark guy. He was average Joe," Colwell said. "It's not like he ever pushed his beliefs on anybody else."But a church member who had been at the service when the shooting happened said Ratzmann seemed depressed to her. Frazier told CBS News that Ratzmann was upset by a youthful sermon from another preacher.Ratzmann built his or her own greenhouse, and neighbors said he shared his homegrown vegetables together. Colwell said Ratzmann raised trout and designed a system in which he used trout waste to fertilize his greenhouse plants — including tropical plants and Venus flytraps — then recycled the lake back to the fish tank. Younger crowd built his own garage.The other day, Colwell helped Ratzmann fix his truck. Herrmann said he took proper his house and three dogs."He never bothered anybody around here," he was quoted saying."He brought me over a zucchini which was about foot-and-a-half long," Colwell told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "We ate it for a week."Robert Blasczyk, another resident of Ratzmann's modest New Berlin neighborhood, said Ratzmann was a drinker, but that he couldn't believe he might be violent."He was the quietest guy in the world, the nicest," said Blasczyk. "I could have never believed this inside a million years."
