The Democratic National Committee kicked off the 2010 political party ad wars in an instant Wednesday when it debuted its first "soft money" issue ad, section of a $25 million commercial blitz. The TV spot, which focuses on Al Gore's plan to reduce prescription drug costs for older folks, will air at least from the weekend in 15 states - including several key Midwestern "swing" states. On the commercial's unveiling in Washington, DNC Chairman Joe Andrew experimented with avoid criticism by calling it a "party-building ad" centering on an issue Americans care about, and explaining that it'll benefit all Democratic candidates, not only Gore. To illustrate his point, Andrew was joined with the news conference by House Minority Leader Richard Gephardt, Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle and eight older folks.Republicans, however, immediately cried foul, charging that Gore broke a pledge he made in March promising that the DNC would not run issue ads "unless and until" the Republican National Committee did. "It seems like to me they're laying out a smoke screen to offer an excuse for Al Gore to break his promise," Texas Gov. George W. Bush said. But the Republicans may be getting ready to launch their own soft money ads. There's word that the RNC is finalizing plans for a new ad campaign and checking out the availability of television time. However, RNC advisers say they'll probably wait a couple of days to get some more mileage out of their contention that Gore went back on his word. However the DNC plays it, the ad clearly was made to benefit Gore - half lots of specifically touts his medication plan. In fact, the group that produced the ad, Democratic Victory 2000, consists of several political consultants used by the Gore campaign. The DNC's ad blitz – which won't cost the Gore campaign any cash – comes at a crucial here we are at the vice president. His pre-nomination campaign money is drying up, while the party itslef has a good amount of money to spend on advertising. Additionally, the DNC has been anxious to acquire these ads out to obtain the presidential race focused on issues. Democrats figure Gore has got the advantage over Bush on several key issues, including prescription drug costs for seniors. The 15 states the location where the ad is running were carefully chosen to aid Gore in November. The DNC hopes to make inroads in Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Mexico and a swath of Midwestern states – Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin – which are shaping up as major battlegrounds. And they hope to fare well in several Southern states where President Clinton had success in the past: Florida, Georgia, Kentucky and Louisiana. The past three states – Iowa, Oregon and Washington – are states that Gore advisers say they expect you'll win. The reason to target those states would be to tempt Bush to waste cash airtime in states he'll eventually lose. ugg adirondack tall sale From the start, this has been a heavyweight fight: First lady Hillary Clinton versus Nyc Mayor Rudy Giuliani. But now there may be another contender, reports CBS News Correspondent Diana Olick."We are looking at some of the most recent independent polls which can be suggesting that a majority of New York voters want to have somebody else in the race," said The big apple Rep. Rick Lazio.Lazio is a pro-choice, four-term Republican congressman, assistant majority leader and person in the House banking committee. Last fall, Republicans asked him to bow out of your Senate race in favor of the man he calls a celebrity candidate, Mayor Guiliani. "You aren't a celebrity. How could you win against Hillary Clinton?" Lazio was asked. "I think you have got to ask New Yorkers if they want entertainment or they need good government," he stated.Giuliani is famous for cleaning up New York City, but Lazio notes he is not well-known, nor well-liked outside the city. Statewide, his sometimes vindictive personality and political tactics are infamous."I'm simply a really nice guy with a great spontaneity. I get along with everyone," Giulian has stated. But he doesn't get together with New York's Conservative Party over differences on abortion. No Republican in Twenty five years has won statewide office without that endorsement. This month, that party's leader asked Lazio to have back in the race. "It is an enormous challenge, but it is a challenge for the New York public just as much as for me," Lazio said. "This is often a tough decision for me since i have to decide with my heart and my head . If I had to make this decision just with my heart, I'd already be running." Lazio says he'd chance a positive campaign and says he's watching John McCain closely. If the reform-minded underdog can win South Carolina, Lazio says it could tip into your market between his head and the heart.© 2000 CBS Worldwide Inc. That's probably why she's managed to get this far."Hospital officials are not discussing true, the newspaper reported.Susan Torres, a 26-year-old researcher at the National Institutes of Health, lost consciousness from your stroke May 7 after aggressive melanoma spread to her brain. Jason Torres said doctors told him his wife's brain functions have stopped.Torres said the fetus seems to be thriving, but his wife's doctors have told him they do know of no cases certainly where an brain-dead mother with melanoma has delivered your baby.If his wife and her fetus live until mid-July, or about 25 weeks' gestation, the fetus could survive delivery, though using a heightened risk of brain damage along with other problems, Torres said. "Any chance in any way to save the baby, and Susan could have said, 'Let's go for it.'"Torres has quit his job and practically lives by Susan's side in the hospital, CBS News Correspondent Sharyl Attkisson reports. The master plan he's following is costly - he figures he's looking at $1 million in medical bills, its not all covered by insurance. Leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have agreed to speed up their program to liberalize trade from the year 2010 -- five years ahead of schedule, reports Gaby Tabunar for CBS News. Tariffs will probably be eliminated on most goods traded inside the moving the region to its long-term purpose of a common market with a common currency, that could be as much as a half-century away. But in the short term, China, Japan, Columbia and the 10-nation Association agreed on extending cooperation in an array of financial and trade-related issues at Sunday's summit in Manila. The East Asian markets encompass about two-fifths in the world's population and about $7.75 trillion in combined GDP. A real grouping could rival Europe and the United States, if it were ever united. But analysts repeat the staggering differences in economic development involving the 13 nations involved would take decades to beat. Programs for example Ad-Aware and SpySweeper can scour computers for spyware. Magid likes Spybot Search & Destroy."You can download this method for free from Download.com and therefore are encouraged — but not required — to generate a donation to its author, Patrick Kolla, to assist him with his work," he explained. Both Spybot and Ad-Aware are good, "but Spybot is a lot more aggressive and gets rid of programs that Ad-aware results in," he added.Microsoft recommends that users clean their PCs of spyware and support their data before activating the auto update feature that automatically downloads Service Pack 2, or SP2.Individuals who download SP2 also may need to check whether legitimate programs, such as third-party security software, need to be updated. SP2 makes major changes, including adding a Windows Firewall to better guard computers against attack, and people changes can also cause compatibility issues with other software.Microsoft finished focus on SP2 in early August and is slowly distributing it to customers through automatic downloads, manual downloads and CDs. The business is metering out the product to prevent clogging up networks and slowing other Internet traffic — and to monitor for any glitches.Goff said less than 10 million consumers have received SP2, while into the millions businesses have downloaded the product. Francesca Gessner checks out a new ad from Ny GOP Senate hopeful Rick Lazio. The ad reveals a "ringer" in a single of Hillary's recent ads, again calling the 1st lady's trustworthiness into question. The Ad: The big apple Republican Senate candidate Rep. Rick Lazio features a new 15-second TV ad titled Ringer. Lazio's new commercial attacks a brand new York Democratic Party ad released the other day called Stand that featured average New Yorkers reacting to news that Lazio supported Newt Gingrich's measures. Ringer contends any particular one of the supposed "real voters" interviewed in Stand is usually a retired Democratic Party employee. The ad is airing statewide in The big apple.Audio: Announcer: "Seen Hillary Clinton's new negative ad? Just who are these 'real voters'? Meet Carol - eight years about the Democratic Assembly payroll. Another phony ad from Hillary Clinton. You only can't trust her."Visual: The ad opens which has a picture of Hillary Clinton and underneath a TV showing the Democratic Party ad Stand, using the text, "New Negative Ad." The ad then shows Carol Madow-Kolberg with the text "Carol - 8 years for the Democratic Assembly payroll." The ad concludes with white letters over a black screen that read, "HILLARY CLINTON. You Just Can't Trust Her."Fact check: Carol Madow-Kolberg was an office manager to Bronx Assemblyman Stephen Kaufman and has been retired for two main years. The New York State Democratic Party says they had no idea who Carol was whenever they interviewed her in front of a supermarket in White Plains, N.Y. "The interview was completely random, the answers unscripted," says Peter Kauffman, a spokesman for your New York State Democratic Party. The Strategy: Ringer is the third in the string of hard-hitting ads released in the last week by the Lazio campaign sounding the common theme that Hillary Clinton cannot be trusted. Last week Lazio released two ads questioning Hillary's trustworthiness: one featuring Sen. John McCain saying, "Rick Lazio - he's the candidate it is possible to trust"; the other using the same tag-line as in Ringer : "Hillary Clinton. You just can't trust her." The ads reflect a new strategy in the Lazio campaign to make Clinton's character a central trouble in the New York Senate race. In a race that remains a dead-heat, the Lazio campaign is looking to use the character question to sway undecided voters. where to Cheap ugg boots Burning Question: More Fires? The granddaughter of Police Chief Bernard Parks was shot to death inside a restaurant parking lot by a gunman who was simply apparently aiming for her friend, authorities said. Lori Gonzalez, 20, was shot more than once by a man who walked up and opened fire about the car in the driveway of your Popeye's chicken restaurant in south Chicago at 10:15 p.m. Sunday, Lt. Horace Frank said. Police said that they had no information about a possible motive for that attack. "We're really asking the public's help out with bringing this individual to justice," Frank said. The attacker apparently was shooting for Gonzalez's passenger, a 20-year-old friend, police said. "He ducked anf the husband was not injured," Officer Jason Lee said. Detectives have started examining surveillance tapes from a gas station near the shooting scene assured that the camera recorded footage with the killer. Gonzalez is the daughter of just one of Parks' three daughters, Felicia, Lee said. Parks also has a son. Parks with his fantastic family were "grieving in seclusion," based on a police department statement. Family members was "devastated," Frank added. Mayor Richard Riordan issued an announcement of condolence, saying he and the wife, Nancy, were "deeply saddened by the tragic death." Her father, Joe Gonzalez, told the la Times his daughter was studying English at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, about 60 miles southeast of La. She also held two jobs, like a drug store clerk and an operator with Pacific Bell. Gonzalez described his daughter, who moved together with her father and his family in Mission Viejo couple of years ago, as "wonderful with people and energetic." She was in Los Angeles visiting her mother, that is divorced from Gonzalez. Bruce Smith, a resident of the neighborhood where Gonzalez was shot, said safety concerns keep him from area restaurants late at night. "Gang problems, drug problems - we have in this part of town. I would not consider it 100 percent safe," he said. Gonzalez's death isn't the first time Parks' family has made the news. Experts say consuming fatty foods won't ruin your diet. For years, health authorities have strongly urged Americans to eat less fat -- and Americans have heeded their advice. But eating foods high in fat every so often would really help you maintain good health, reports Correspondent Anne Peterson of CBS News affiliate KCTV in Kansas City, Mo. Fat intake is at an all-time low, and obesity are at an all-time high. By overindulging in low-fat yet high-calorie foods, many individuals have gone overboard, experts say. Most people cut out meat and dairy products because they're one of the most visible sources of fat. By reduction of milk products from your diet, you happen to be also cutting out a major reasons for calcium, vitamin D, and riboflavin. Avoiding meat can reduce out sources of zinc, iron, niacin, riboflavin and Vitamin b.Other vitamins found in some fatty foods -- vitamins A, D, E, and K -- are important for a healthy diet, says Lester Crawford, a professor of nutrition at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C."These [vitamins] are necessary to life -- without fat inside a diet, they are not absorbed properly," Crawford says. Moreover, it's possible to prevent the onset of certain diseases in the event you include fatty foods in your diet. Monounsaturated fats help reduce the risk of heart disease and lab studies show that conjugated linoleic acid, a type of fat naturally found in dairy products and red meat, may help prevent colon cancer.Based on Penny Chris Etherton, a professor of nutrition at Penn State University in Hershey, Pa., the unhealthy fat found in chocolate and meat contains stearic acid which, unlike other fatty acids, does not raise blood cholesterol levels. The advice of health authorities to use less fat has triggered a fat phobia in America. It's time we eat these types of food every so often, not just for enjoyment, but because it is good for us. North Korea criticized the United States for warning that the communist nation could possibly be getting ready to test a nuclear bomb, but failed to deny such preparations were underway.Pyongyang also maintained it might stay away from international disarmament talks."The Usa is making a fuss praoclaiming that it was notifying the International Atomic Energy Agency, Japan and other associated countries of its own opinion which our republic may conduct an underground nuclear test in June," the North's main state-run Rodong Sinmun daily wrote inside a commentary, according to the country's official Korean Central News Agency. However, its northern border didn't confirm or deny it absolutely was planning such a test. The newspaper said Washington was branding North Korea as being a "nuclear criminal" in order to stifle the country. It also said the administration of President Bush wasn't behaving normally and that the North "cannot deal with" Washington.U.S. officials said last week that spy satellites show possible preparations for North Korea's first-ever nuclear weapons test, such as the digging and refilling of a giant hole at a suspected test site in northeastern Kilju combined with apparent construction of a reviewing stand being erected a long way away.North Korea claimed in February to have nuclear weapons, and international experts accept it has enough plutonium to build about six bombs. Its northern border also recently shut down a nuclear reactor, relocating that could allow it to harvest yet more plutonium.Pyongyang has refused to go back to six-nation disarmament talks since last June, after three rounds ended with no breakthroughs. U.S. officials have said the deadlock can't carry on forever and that other moves might be required — believed to include seeking sanctions within the U.N. Security Council. On Tuesday, the North claimed Washington ended up being blame for the stalemate in the talks, which include China, Japan, Russia and Columbia."Our country did everything (that) we're able to do to solve the problems with the highest flexibility and tolerance from the previous six-party talks," Rodong Sinmun wrote. no previous page next 1/2 ugg boots with zip Fidel Castro, the world's longest ruling head of state, turns 79 Saturday, celebrating a vital political and legal victory over his enemies in exile after a U.S. appeals court ordered a whole new trial in the high-profile case of five alleged Cuban spies.Castro, who has led the communist-run island for 47 years, shows no indication to be ready to retire."Every year on Castro's birthday, people please note because with no plans to leave office, Castro's life span is his term limit," said CBS News Foreign Affairs Analyst Pamela Falk, "and at 79, Castro has been doing power in Cuba through the relation to ten U.S. Presidents, from President Dwight D. Eisenhower to President George W. Bush, remaining a long ruling leader in the world and surpassing even Cuba's 77 year life span."The U.S. court ruling gave him an enhancement as Cubans face tough domestic problems, such as a housing crisis and an antiquated electrical grid which had frequent and stifling power outages earlier this summer.Since the men's conviction 4 years ago as unregistered agents of the foreign government, Cuba has campaigned for the children, calling them heroes in the island's most crucial ideological battle since Castro's successful 2000 fight for the return of castaway Elian Gonzalez. While admitting being Cuban agents, the defendants said these folks were only spying on "terrorist" Cuban exile groups and never the U.S. government.Castro has not publicly commented on Tuesday's ruling from the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta.
