A driver with The Evening News newspaper opened fire using a shotgun Thursday at the newspaper's office, killing the circulation manager, police said. Police hunted to the driver, Nathan Hanna, who apparently fled as part of his pickup truck. Employees scrambled under desks or hid from the darkroom after the gunman, apparently aimed for circulation manager Anthony Gillespie, 47, killing him with two shotgun blasts, said Editor Ken Fazzari, who called 911 from under a desk. Hanna didn't say anything before he started shooting, Fazzari said. "This is just a total shock that i'm still shaking, have been for hours on end," Fazzari said. Police Officer John Weist said Hanna was fired by the newspaper. But Fazzari said to his knowledge, Hanna was still an employee. Workers in buildings nearby were advised to lock themselves in following the attack, and SWAT units surrounded the newspaper offices for four hours, until police determined no hostages were taken. Officers escorted 14 people from the building, while others made it from their own soon after the shooting. Some were taken up a hospital to be evaluated emotionally and physically. Lex Walsh, whose barber shop is about 100 feet from the building, said the paper's receptionist escaped and ran to his barber shop, extremely distraught and saying others were trapped in the building. The newspaper is on Michigan's Upper Peninsula, about 350 miles north of Detroit for the Canadian border. It has a circulation of about 7,300. The paper ordinarily publishes every day but Saturday. Surgeons around the country start to use Hermes, a new medical device.Hermes can be a computer that responds to voice commands sent by surgeons, like James Luketich, throughout an operation."There are a variety of commands controlling lights, pressure within the abdomen, camera, focus, white balance," says the surgeon. "I can take pictures; I can take video, all at the simple voice command." More NewsHermes may even handle some specific operation functions for that surgeon, like controlling just how much carbon dioxide to pump into a patient's abdomen and indicating if you find a problem. It also controls you the surgeon uses to see what she or he is doing.It can even produce a phone call and compliment choices on a job well done.Many of Hermes' tasks have traditionally been done by a nurse. "But the nurse has many other duties to the patient when it comes to helping the operation run smoothly," says Dr. Lutenick. "And each and every time I have to stop and ask the nurse to prevent what she's doing and are available over, it halts the flow with the operation,?…the rhythm in the operation," he says. "The nurses are pretty pleased about this. It frees them to do other care."So far, he adds, Hermes seems to shorten the duration of an operation, which is important to help improve patient outcome.Using this technology's next generation, voice-activated systems will help tilt the table throughout the operation. Now, last week's demonstration is responsible for the great and the good, or if you prefer, the people in power, to huff and puff and say "it's disgraceful" and, jointly fool cried, "they should all go to prison". In reality, the five demonstrators in Parliament plus the man who stood over a ledge of Buckingham Palace dressed as Batman, demonstrating towards divorced fathers, deserve a public vote of thank you for proving just how pathetic British security is and exactly how vulnerable our leaders are becoming. And how out of touch they're. The reason for both protests was simple ….that sections of society believe that Parliament and the democratic process didn't work them. And therefore they feel they've got nothing to lose. In Britain, after centuries of popularity, foxhunting is now to be banned, using the loss of a way of life ... and 6 thousand jobs. No sincerely tolerant society could subject a minority to such a ban. Or spend immeasurable Parliamentary time and energy on getting it through. Not when British soldiers will be in harms way in Iraq, we're threatened by from global terrorism and Iran and North Korea take presctiption the verge of nuclear weapons. With this country, while most of us carry on and eat chicken and other meat reared in pretty dodgy ways, this new law may lead to violence and division nowadays. From Watt Tyler to the suffragettes and also the war in Iraq, the streets in london are where the cries of protest have always been heard. On this occasion though, it's not going to just be the tax paying classes who definitely are criminalized … it'll be eight year old, pig tailed girls riding their ponies towards the local hunt.It's a law aimed fair and square at families who've lived in the countryside for generations and not simply families with money. Federal prosecutors say five executives duped investors and state regulators alike in a decade-long, $80 million looting of your trust company and a real-estate title company.The men were charged Tuesday with what U.S. Attorney Patrick J. Capriotti attorney Jeffrey Steinback failed to immediately return a message seeking comment.The trust customers got to keep about 92 percent with their holdings, prosecutors said. They said a civil court decision has spread the loss among account holders.The $30 million in Intercounty escrowed funds were paid by a title reinsurance company, Fidelity National Title Insurance Co. of recent York, federal officials said.The financial woes at Intercounty began in early 1980s with a sour investment in the junk bond market that made a $10 million shortfall, the indictment said.Intercounty's problems worsened because of a title-insurance price war, officials said. Thousands of gallons of beer in the Coors Brewing Co. spilled right into a creek Friday, killing 1000s of fish and prompting health warnings.CBS News Reporter Rick Salinger says a worker flipped the wrong switch and sent 77,500 gallons of beer from fermenting tanks to some wastewater treatment plant and then into Clear Creek."Somebody made a mistake," said Coors spokeswoman Aimee St. Clair. "We're trying to track down how it happened therefore it doesn't happen again."The Colorado Department of Public Health advised residents in order to avoid contact with the creek south in the brewery because of a small bacterial risk.Water could cause illness if consumed, said J. David Holm, director of the Water Quality Division.Micro-organisms inside the fermenting tanks convert sugars into alcohol. "The organics (micro-organisms, sugars and alcohol) lessen the amount of oxygen in the creek along with the fish suffocate," St. Clair said.Scott Hoover in the Colorado Division of Wildlife said dead fish have been discovered miles away from the brewery."There are probably 200 to 300 fish below in probably a 20-to 30-yard stretch," Hoover said.Employees worked during the night to fix the problem, said John Schallenkamp, Coors' chief environmental officer."We apologize to our community for this mistake," he said. "No, don't try to escape. …It's incredibly rude. I'm here supplying you with an interview, and answering questions, and you do something really nasty. You are a jerk. You're a jerk."Cruise wiped his face again because prankster said something else, then Cruise came back with, "Well, you know what? You're a jerk. …You need to be ashamed of yourself."With that, Cruise threw his hands up and, smiling, observed, "Amazing."And because he walked away, the crowd yelled out, "Tom, Tom…"The bogus interviewer and his awesome camera crew, working for an area comedy show, were led away. They face assault charges, Roth says.Having a movie to promote, Cruise was quickly back on script, commenting in regards to the film.In "War of the Worlds," notes Roth, Cruise plays a divorced dad, facing alien invaders, who wishes to save his family, the world -- and a slumping Hollywood box office. This isn't to be confused with real life, where he's a divorced dad facing enthusiastic fans who wishes to convince the world this romance applies love, which might, incidentally, provide a boost to the movie business.
Obesity in America is on the rise and the hunt for solutions now includes a drastic surgical procedure, CBS News Medical Correspondent Elizabeth Kaledin reports. British lawmakers will vote Tuesday on whether parents should be banned from smacking their young children, an emotive issue containing caused rumblings of dissent in Pm Tony Blair's governing Labour Party.The government is opposed to an outright ban, and says parents ought to be allowed to exercise "reasonable chastisement," so long as it does not lead to bruises, skin reddening, or psychological problems for a child, reports CBS News Correspondent Steve Holt.Many Labour lawmakers, however, are unhappy with legislation ahead of the House of Commons, and are calling for any form of physical punishment being outlawed.Blair says that is not necessary, that most parents understand the difference between discipline and abuse. The fact that he might suffer an embarrassing defeat about the issue is getting almost as much attention as the proposed ban itself. Britain no longer has sufficient step on the issue with several Europe, including Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Austria, where all physical punishment of babies is illegal.Pressure groups insist children have to have the same legal protection from being hit as adults together called for the law to be changed. "Giving children equal protection under the law on assault is a fundamental human rights principle," said Sir William Utting with the Children Are Unbeatable coalition. "There could be no justification whatsoever for that smallest and most fragile of our own citizens having less protection than we skip over ourselves." Blair's government has repeatedly shied away from a ban, fearing it's going to be accused of intruding into family affairs.The current law dates back to a case in 1860, each time a judge ruled that physical punishment of children should be allowed as a "reasonable chastisement."Campaigners debate that ruling is ambiguous and a couple parliamentary committees have said it is too often used as a legal defense to excuse violent behavior which goes far beyond a smack.A few months ago in the House of Lords, Liberal Democrat peer Lord Lester proposed amending what the law states to allow moderate spanking, but remove the "reasonable chastisement" defense if parents harmed a young child physically or mentally.The government is urging lawmakers to back the Lester amendment once the House of Commons votes later Tuesday. Labour lawmakers are already threatened with disciplinary measures should they back a rebel amendment with a total ban.If the legislation is approved, the new law will make it simpler for authorities to prosecute violent parents, officials said.
