"When you go into a restaurant, consider splitting an entree or even an appetizer," says Alice Lichtenstein of the American Heart Association. "Eventually, the restaurants will get the message and they offer two sizes." black cardy uggs Senate Republicans defeated a Democratic medication bill Thursday night but Democrats in the future are expected to give the GOP a dose of its own medicine. Relief from the soaring cost of prescription drugs sits on top of America's wish list, reports CBS News Correspondent Diana Olick, and lawmakers understand that. That's why Republicans, who just rejected a Democratic Medicare drug benefit by a 53-to-44 vote on largely party lines, are pushing their unique benefit bill to the floor in the near future, even though they know Democrats won't purchase it. "They are proposing a crazy quilt of- what else? - private prescription plans, an offer that the private insurance industry has stated over and over will not work," said Democratic Sen. Richard Gephardt. Republicans desire to take government out of the prescription plan by orchestrating works with private insurers and, occasionally, adding government subsidies. "Our plan will offer you the best prices on the drugs (seniors) need, not some government bureaucracy plan that may not offer the drug the doctor prescribed," said Rep. Phil English of Pennsylvania, one of the many Republicans who touted the GOP handiwork in daytime.Democrats proposed a costlier policy for a uniform government-defined prescription drug benefit to be offered to all 39 million Medicare recipients nationwide. It necessary a premium of about $35 a month and a deductible of $250 a year. Next, the government and the individual would evenly split the price of the next $3,500 in drug expenses as well as the government would pick up 75 percent of annual expenses between $3,500 and $4,000. The government treasury would pick up the entire cost above that quantity. Their bill also provides subsidies for low-income older persons.President Clinton calls, who sports ths Democratic plan, said the GOP proposal is a benefit for the companies who make drugs, not the seniors who are required them mostThat seems to matter little to lawmakers who become if they just want to get on record they tried to do something and then blame it on the other hand when it doesn't work. ©2000 CBS Worldwide Inc. Kennedy Jr. inside a plane crash in the Atlantic.Inside the week since the accident, there have been countless eulogies for the 38-year-old Kennedy. But tributes towards the Bessettes have seemed glancing at the best, CBS News Correspondent Jeffrey Kofman reports. The sisters were remembered not so much for how they lived their lives as for what they became in death -- figures in another Kennedy tragedy. Not in Greenwich, the affluent shoreline town the place that the Bessettes grew up. Outside Christ Church, where a private memorial service took place Saturday night, hundreds of people gathered to show support for the family, leaving bouquets and hand-written notes. They spoke of two remarkable daughters, two promise-filled futures. And the unspeakable sorrow of parents forced to bury their kids.Significantly, the invitation-only candlelight service occured in the name of Lauren -- the "other Bessette," the victim the planet knew least -- although prayers were and then to be offered for Carolyn and John. 300 people were expected.Ann Freeman, the Bessette sisters' mother, and Dr. Richard Freeman, their stepfather, arrived early. Steve Lappas was hired on Monday as basketball coach at Massachusetts a couple of days after he unexpectedly resigned at Villanova. He replaces James "Bruiser" Flint, who in five years restored the program's integrity but would not produce a winner. The hiring was announced through the school before a campus news conference. UMass posted a 15-15 (11-5 Atlantic 10) record this season but failed to earn a party's invitation to the NCAA or NIT tournaments. More vital, flagging attendance in the school's primary revenue sport was dragging down a sports department that had grown familiar with the money a winning program provided. Lappas had signed a contract extension in July that's to have kept him at Villanova from the 2003-04 season. But he quit following the Wildcats failed to make the NCAA tournament and lost from the first round of the NIT. The defeats rekindled what had become annual complaints about his postseason failures. Villanova earned its last NCAA bid in 1999 but lost within the first round to Mississippi. The Wildcats were 2-4 from the NCAA tournament under Lappas, losing three straight years from the first or second round despite be seeded Nos. 3, 3 and 4 seeds. In every, Lappas was 174-110 in nine seasons at Villanova, with four NCAA tournament berths and three from the NIT. UMass had 11 consecutive losing seasons before John Calipari arrived and transformed the teachers into a national power. The Minutemen won five consecutive Atlantic 10 titles and attended the 1996 Final Four under Calipari, however the improvement came at a price. Marcus Camby, one of the most illustrious UMass player since Julius Erving, later admitted taking gifts from an agent, including $5,300 of jewelry along with the services of a prostitute. As being a penalty, the NCAA expunged the school's Final Four appearance and ordered it to pay back the proceeds from the trip. Camby and Calipari were passed by then, having jumped towards the NBA. That left Flint, Calipari's longtime assistant, to attempt to revive the program. Flint went 86-72, making the NCAA tournament in the first two seasons. But the Minutemen fell to 14-16 in 1998-99, and 17-16 last season, such as a first-round NIT loss.©2001 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. Support for Windows 95 stopped Dec. 31, 2001.People whose machines run Windows 98 will not be able to call Microsoft for help after Jan. 16. Online assistance will still be available.Analysts said the support phase-out must not cause major problems, partly because businesses - the greatest segment of the PC market - generally upgrade their computers every 3-5 years."I don't think anybody's losing it about it," said Jupiter Research analyst Joe Wilcox. "One, the os are very old and I don't think a large number of businesses are using (them) in critical areas. Two ... it has an ample warning that these goods are end-of-life."But CBS News technology consultant Larry Magid suggests that many individuals, non-profit organizations, schools and gov departments still use Windows 98 and even Windows 95. And they may feel "a little bit betrayed" by Microsoft, Magid says."Microsoft is simply saying, 'Upgrade or you're out of luck. You'll have to go somewhere else if you need help,' " he notes.Magid said Microsoft makes money if users are required to upgrade from Windows 98 to Windows XP. But, he said, many older computers could be incapable of running XP, and "if you do have a problem, you may be on your own"Magid suggests that users of 98 or 95 go to Microsoft's online support area or use an independent consultant if they need assistance.Wilcox argued that consumers have better why you should upgrade than the approaching end of support."Those older os's, as long as they're kicking around, they're potential security difficulties for every company that uses them," Wilcox said. "They weren't constructed with encryption of data in mind. Too much info online is transmitted, passwords and things, as clear text. If you're looking for a good way to allow a virus on the network or allow it to be hacked, keep running these older os's."
Computer troubles at an air-traffic control center stalled flights into and out of the New York area's three major airports Friday.Within an unrelated glitch Friday, Air Force One delivered air traffic radars for 36 seconds as it was en route to the Boston area, CBS News Correspondent Bob Orr reports. The situation was related to an air-traffic control antenna in Nj-new jersey. In New York, the problem was centered at an air-traffic control center, TRACON (Terminal Radar Approach Control), based on Westbury, Long Island. Flights were delayed at New York's LaGuardia and Kennedy airports along with the Newark, N.J., airport, said Eliot Brenner, a spokesman for that Federal Aviation Administration in Washington. Flights scheduled for New York arrival were being held in their departure points, Brenner said. The computer problem involved new TRACON software that was first loaded at 5:30 a.m. When technicians couldn't get it to work, the old software was reloaded by 7:10 a.m. Brenner said. "We were testing new software, then when we brought the older software up - the standard software that we use every day - that's when we started having the problem," said Arlene Salac, an FAA spokeswoman in New York. The radar system handles arrivals and departures within 60 miles in the airports along with the airport towers. "There's few people like going traffic at that hour, therefore the ripple effect of the problem is not expected to be extensive," Brenner said. Newark Airport reported the longest delays, up to two hours, said Sgt. Donald Kupper in the Port Authority of New York and Nj-new jersey, which runs the three airports. LaGuardia experienced initial delays of approximately 45 minutes that were cut down to about 15 minutes, and Kennedy reported minimal delays since 7:30 a.m. The TRACON center controls aircraft following your planes rise to an altitude which can be between 11,000 and 17,000 feet. Once planes travel beyond its radius, they are handed off to one of 21 regional FAA centers around the world. The software is designed to improve air safety by relieving controllers of busy work. ugg adirondack boot ii NO 38% Furthermore, unfavorable personal opinions of Starr always outnumber favorable ones by greater than two to one. Jack Abramoff, the lobbyist who spawned a congressional corruption scandal, pleaded guilty Tuesday to a few felonies and pledged to cooperate within a criminal probe edging closer to former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay."I plead guilty, your honor," Abramoff said in flat, unemotional tones, accepting a plea bargain in spite of this he had provided lavish trips, golf outings, meals and more to public officials "in exchange for a series of official acts."The deal comes after two years of intense federal investigationand months of negotiation with Abramoff's lawyers, reports CBS News correspondent Gloria Borger.Once, he reported payments totaling $50,000 for the wife of a congressional aide to help you block legislation for a client. The aide worked for DeLay, according to officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.Public corruption aside, Abramoff admitted defrauding four Indian tribes as well as other clients, taking millions in kickbacks coming from a one-time business partner, misusing a charity he had established and failing to pay fees on millions of ill-gotten gains. He or she is expected to plead guilty to additional charges on Wednesday in Florida associated with charges stemming from the 2000 buying a fleet of gambling boats.Borger adds that 12-15 folks Congress could face further scrutiny due to Abramoff's plea deal. At the Justice Department, officials said they intend to make use of the trove of e-mails as well as other material in Abramoff's possession included in a probe that is believed to be centering on as many as 20 members of Congress and aides."This investigation continues ... however long it requires, wherever it leads," said Alice Fisher, assistant attorney general.Whatever the legal ramifications, there was swift political fallout in the dawn of an election year through which minority Democrats intend to make ethics a campaign issue."We are coming up with a very important congressional election," says Thomas DeLuca, a political science professor at Fordham University. "These corruption scandals which tend, at this time, to be in the Republican party are most often building up at precisely the time that President Bush's credibility over a host of issues may be falling rapidly."In a turnabout, House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., joined the roster of politicians announcing intends to donate Abramoff's campaign contributions to charity.House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said Abramoff's confession in the court was "not a surprise because this Republican Congress is among the most corrupt in history and the United states citizens are paying the price." no previous page next 1/3 knitted ugg boots sale A British tour operator said Monday it may bill the brawling passengers who forced a Jamaica-bound jet to produce an unscheduled stop in Virginia."We are presently considering action to be taken against these customers which can include the 15,000 to 20,000 pound [approximately $30,000] price of diverting the flight," Airtours International said within a statement. The Boeing 767 charter, flying from London to Montego Bay on Sunday, made an unplanned remain in Norfolk, Virginia, where a dozen rowdy passengers were taken from the plane. A spokesman for Norfolk Airport terminal said the 12 English and Irish passengers became unruly after consuming alcohol. But two of the people involved have complained these were treated unfairly. "We're getting our solicitor whenever we get home."Another woman said, "Two people had a simple argument and because i was in one group the extra 10 got shoved off."The incident occurred while the flight was about 560 miles over East Coast. The disruption included shouting, then one traveler threw a drink on another. "Calming techniques employed by the crew failed to quell the problem and the captain decided to divert the plane for that safety of crew as well as other passengers on board," the corporation said.FBI agents and airport police questioned the 12 passengers, but none of them were charged. It's been more than six years since fire destroyed the Branch Davidian compound in Texas, killing cult leader David Koresh and many of his followers. Now, you can find calls to reenact the final hours with the FBI siege. All that's left of the Branch Davidian compound outside Waco is an old bus, some shattered concrete -- as well as the memories. And Monday, reports CBS News Correspondent Jim Stewart, the Justice Department argued that the judge's proposal to "re-create" what happened there in 1993 when 80 people died, would simply never work.Former Sen. John Danforth, that's re-investigating the Davidian seige, and lawyers for Davidian survivors have asked U.S. District Judge Walter Smith to oversee a reenactment of the final hours with the standoff to determine whether FBI agents fired their guns that particular day. Surviving Davidians have sued, contending these folks were kept pinned inside the burning compound by FBI gunfire, and that an infrared surveillance tape produced by the FBI that day proves it. The little flashes visible on the tape, it is said, are gunfire. In response, the Justice Department stated it would welcome a "court-appointed expert to ascertain whether gunfire can be seen by (infrared) technology in a specified range...and if so, just what it looks like." But, they argued, it is neither "necessary...nor practicable" to recreate everything in Waco that day, including the "weather... the angle of the sun... or conditions in the grass." Deputy Attorney General Eric Holder said when the court orders it, they'll try, but he doesn't think it will work. "Re-creating something in an exact way is, I think, virtually impossible." he says. What the government really fears is that the test itself will become another method to obtain controversy. Some of the technology in position that day has already changed, then there is virtually nothing left on the ground the place that the tape was shot. If your government goes along, the outcome of the test isn't certain. While whether or not this doesn't, there will only be more charges of a coverup. discount mulberry bags Koplan says, "We waited because accuracy is a vital thing, and we wanted to hold off until we had accurate information."
