Casual observers of wire news programming might be forgiven for assuming that Christianity is a religion characterized by a toxic blend of ignorant belligerence and whiny self-pity. Turn on Joe Scarborough's MSNBC show, and you really are likely to be greeted by a lunatic named William Donohue, president of something referred to as Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, who complains that "Hollywood is controlled by secular Jews who hate Christianity generally speaking and Catholicism in particular," which "Hollywood likes anal sex." In the 2004 election campaign, he has been heard lamenting that John Kerry "never found an abortion he couldn't justify" and attacking the publishing promote for its cover-up of the "gay death style." Inside a more recent Scarborough appearance, Donohue returned to his favorite topic, trying to explain to viewers that many in "Hollywood" — which, remember, is controlled by you-know-who — love money a great deal they would happily "sodomize their own mother" onscreen. Novak converted from Judaism for an Opus Dei form of Catholicism, while Begala was raised from the faith, remains devout as well as named his eldest child John Paul. As he asked Blitzer, "Well, now, who are that you pass moral judgment on my small religion, Mr. Blitzer ... on the day of my Holy Father's funeral?" adding, "I don't even think anybody should presume which a liberal is not a good Catholic" and "The Holy Father is liberal. ... The Holy Father bitterly opposed President Bush's war in Iraq. He came to St. Louis – and I was there – and he begged America to give up the death penalty. President Bush strongly supports it, as did President Clinton among others. Many of the Holy Father's views, my church's views, are extraordinarily liberal. I mean, the Pope talked about savage, unbridled capitalism, not Bob Novak's capitalism." Netscape and Microsoft have already been informed of the problem. Microsoft has devised a software patch that is now available at its Web page. Netscape's patch is expected soon at its Internet site. "We're definitely not taking this lightly," Microsoft group product manager George Meng told the San Jose Mercury News. "There happens to be a scenario in which someone could do harm to people's systems." Microsoft, on its Web site, said the flaw affects versions of Outlook Express shipped with Microsoft Ie 4.0 or 4.01 on Windows 98, Windows 95, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows NT for DEC Alpha, as well as Windows versions for Macintosh or UNIX machines. The organization said users of the Windows 3.1 and Windows NT 3.51 operating systems are not affected.
North Korea said Tuesday it's going to seize equipment for two nuclear power plants being internal the country, until the United States pays a "penalty" for the decision to stop their construction. Yesterday, the United States, South Korea, Japan along with the European Union tentatively decided to suspend work at Kumho, a remote northeastern coastal village where they've been building two light-water reactors to generate badly needed electricity for that impoverished state. They say that halting the $4.6 billion project is inevitable because North Korea has violated a 1994 agreement by secretly building nuclear weapons. North Korea claimed again Tuesday how the United States had first violated the 1994 agreement, where two power-generating reactors were promised so they could earn a freezing of the North's Soviet-designed reactors, suspected for being used for weapons development. "The U.S. should pay damages for that breach of contract straight away," a spokesman of North Korea's Foreign Ministry told its official news agency, KCNA. "We won't ever allow the U.S. to get facilities, equipment and materials for the light water reactor construction and technical documents now within the Kumho area unless the U.S. pays a problem," it said. North Korea made a similar threat last week. Tuesday's statement came after Washington urged its northern border to permit the removal of equipment from Kumho. A standoff over North Korea's nuclear ambitions began this past year, when U.S. officials said the country admitted running a secret nuclear program depending on enriched uranium. North Korea has denied having a real program. It says Washington made the nuclear crisis to stifle the isolated country and demands that Washington compensate it for economic losses caused by delays in building the nuclear power plants. China is optimistic that another round of six-nation talks about the North Korean nuclear crisis is going to be held before the end of the year, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said Tuesday. The initial round, held in Beijing in August, involved the United States, China, the two Koreas, Japan and Russia. That summit ended by having an agreement to meet again, but no date was set. Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said "if everything goes smoothly and differences relating to the various parties can be narrowed, we have been positive there is hope to start to see the six-party talks within this year." She actually is preparing to do what not one other American woman has done before in flight: she will be the first female commander of an shuttle mission. "Being the first woman is adding a bit of pressure. But the only way I will survive that day... is not to think about the fact that I'm a woman, or the first woman, but just to consider my job and what is vital that you make it successful," Collins said.Collins, 42, has now logged more than 400 hours in space, and became the first woman to pilot a shuttle in 1995. She's been breaking down barriers for women throughout her career."I was probably in the third or fourth class of women to go through Air Force Pilot Training," she says. "And keep in mind that, we were watched very closely back then." "I knew I was setting a precedent for your women to follow me. So I worked, I studied, I gave up going to parties?… It was important in my experience to be successful, not really for me but to demonstrate people that women could undertake it." There are only 19 women inside the 120-member astronaut corps, and Collins believes it's because young women do not choose science and math in high school and college from the same numbers as men."This is definitely a technical world and if you desperately want to be part of the future you're going to have to have a technical background," she says.Collins, who's married to a commercial airline pilot, features a 3-year-old daughter, Bridget.
