A marijuana drug bust, a few canceled concerts, and a no-show with the Academy Awards have all fueled rumors that singing superstar Whitney Houston is battling a medicine problem.According to a new report by US Weekly magazine, the issue is so bad, Houston's family and friends attempted a medicine intervention. Todd Gold, L.A. bureau chief for individuals , tells CBS News Early Show Anchor Bryant Gumbel how the intervention did not work."Whitney sat around the bed in her suite on the hotel, surrounded by her closest relatives and buddies," he says, "and she was very polite. She listened. But, in the words of several of my sources, she was also dazed and out of it."And at the end, at the end of a heartfelt plea by her mother, who she says has always tried to instruct her on right and wrong, Whitney didn't do anything. She refused to go into treatment. She didn't tune in to those who care most about her."Gold says the sources for your article, which he helped write, were at the scene, which took place last summer. "It was something that was serious and terrible and, inside the word of one of the sources, disastrous, because it didn't produce the desired results."He adds he does not know if Houston acknowledged that they has a problem. But his information "seems to substantiate what behind-the-scenes people have been referring to for the past year."The article notes that Houston would have been a no-show at the Oscars and several concerts throughout the last year, and Gold calls such absences "part of her routine. Equally as it's part of her routine to make in a brilliant performance, she's known for last-minute cancellations."Another telling development was the resignation last May of her best companion and adviser, Robyn Crawford, from Houston's New Jersey based company, Nippy, Inc."It's symptomatic of something serious taking place," explains Gold. "People told us a split such as this was previously unimagined, and that they can't see Whitney functioning without her. You understand, it's really quite a time. Her husband is in jail. Her best friend left her. While she's still make videos and support her greatest hits album, one must wonder what normal our life is for her."Her husband, singer Bobby Brown, is a Broward County jail for violating probation with a drunk driving arrest, and US reports that he's in a detox program there."Maybe Bobby's doing something for himself. You understand, it's hard to say," says Gold. "What I believe is really significant is that US Weekly has this story out, and it's not denied, and that perhaps the next step is when a life could be saved. By referring to this…bringing it out in the open, maybe here is the chance that people in Whitney's camp have already been looking for." ugg stockists Investigators were suspicious from the start about the fires high atop the Vail Mountain Ski Resort, reports CBS News Correspondent Bob McNamara reports. A number of separate blazes that destroyed a nearby restaurant, a ski patrol headquarters, and damaged four chair lifts looked more like arson than an accident, investigators say."We're treating it as though it's an investigation -- again, not ruling anything out to ensure we can come to a conclusion," says Vail fireman Jeff Atencio. Based on the Associated Press, an environmental group claimed responsibility for your series of fires that caused $12 million in damages to facilities at the nation's busiest ski resort. Investigators were considering the credibility of the claim Wednesday night. Colorado Gov. Roy Romer referred to as the fires an "act of terrorism," since they came at a time when Vail was beginning a significant land expansion, cutting more trees, and carving more ski runs -- something environmentalists had opposed. "I understand that mountain quite well, and it's inconceivable some natural occurrence would cause simultaneous fires with that ridge," Romer said in a news conference in Denver, 100 miles to the east of Vail.State and federal agents were investigating the fires, which burned separate from each other. Two of the main buildings destroyed were greater mile apart.Today Vail may be the poster town for Colorado's $4-billion-a-year ski industry. Speculate the resorts expand their boundaries into more national forest land every year, behind the powder show and pretty pictures, an effective industry and environmental activists have been on a collision course over resort development."It radically angered some lunatic segment of society possibly which explains why unfortunately this incident could possibly have occurred," says environmentalist Jeff Berman. The fires did more than $12 million worth of damage, as well as the resort suffered a setback. Still, Vail officials say they will open for the ski season within three weeks. The expansion work resumed Tuesday. Several workers used chain saws to clearcut trees, erected fencing and began building a footbridge over a small creek. Firefighters, sometimes wading through thick mud or six inches of snow, continued focus on smoldering fires.Reported By Bob McNamara. ©1998 CBS Worldwide Corp. All rights reserved. AP caused this report Six members of an alleged organized crime group called "The Corporation" were arrested this week in New Jersey, reports CBS News Correspondent Elizabeth Kaledin . Everybody they were involved in cargo theft, one of several hottest crime trends plaguing the continent.Stealing merchandise off of trucks is considered a property crime, and it is rarely punished by jail. That may be one reason why cargo theft is now increasingly common. In addition, the perpetrators frequently have experience of other lucrative criminal enterprises. "Many in the cargo thieves are ex-drug dealers or ex-drug smugglers," says Gail Toth, of the American Trucking Association. "They've actually found it is a lot easier to steal freight, and there isn't any penalty, and they can make more cash."As far as crimes go, cargo theft is comparatively easy. Thieves have devised many different methods: bribing truck drivers, forging paperwork and opening containers without a trace."They could get inside and get whatever they want...the following stop you won't know its burgled," says Lt. Michael Podolak of the Port Authority Police.Skip Borghese's company lost $3 million importance of Fendi perfume just weeks before Christmas."What the world thinks happened is that false paperwork was handed and false identification was presented and it was just that simple..." he states. According to the FBI, cargo theft cost businesses $6 billion recently. Detectives that investigate the crimes say rrndividuals are paying the price."The price that you simply pay for the computer -- about $125 of the price is because of the loss of those products," says On the internet services state trooper Lt. Joe Rogalski.Truckers and police are pushing for mandatory time in jail to punish and deter cargo thieves. Anything in short supply of that, they say, would be highway robbery. It is now expanding to JetConnect with e-mail, which increases the cost to $15.98 but enables passengers to transmit and receive e-mail, including attachments.Another 10 cents will likely be added for each kilobyte of data over 2 kilobytes.John Tague, United's executive v . p . for customer initiatives, said the expanded offering illustrates the airline's concentrate on adding products and services that are "useful, affordable along with line with what travelers are getting.""The availability of e-mail is critical to business flyers," added Bill Pallone, president of Verizon Airfone.United isn't first together with the e-skies concept. Lufthansa, Japan Airlines, British Airways and Scandinavian Airlines System are common trying out or have committed to using a satellite high-speed Internet service offered by Connexion by Boeing this season.United and several other airlines, including American and Delta, committed in 2001 to acquire the service by Connexion, a competitor to Seattle-based Tenzing, that also now counts Cathay Pacific and Virgin Atlantic among its customers. "But it shows some innovation happening at United. Maybe the real message is the fact that United is thinking of new methods for doing business." First there was the nicotine patch. CBS News Correspondent Russ Mitchell reports. purple ugg boots Last week's search for runaway bride Jennifer Wilbanks cost her hometown of Duluth, Ga., a minimum of $60,000, officials estimate, and might land her in legal trouble. Her embarrassed fianc?? says he forgives her, however the local district attorney says he's still deciding whether to file charges.Possible counts include the false reporting of a crime, which is a misdemeanor, and making false statements, a felony, says Gwinett County (Ga.) District Attorney Daniel Porter. But, should Wilbanks be prosecuted?Co-anchor Hannah Storm heard opposite thoughts about The Early Show Tuesday. And CBSNews.com desires to know what you think. Cast your vote in this posting.Defense attorney Gloria Allred asked rhetorically, "Do I believe she should be prosecuted and convicted and, what? Sentenced to twenty years of marriage as a punishment? No! I do think that that's over the top."I feel that this is a person who could voluntarily pay back law enforcement for the costs from the search. And I think that she should do so. But she needn't be prosecuted and convicted to create her pay. She could just choose to do that."Do I think she is a risk to the community? Is there gonna be an epidemic of runaway brides if she's not prosecuted? Absolutely not."She's been punished enough. She's been humiliated in front of her family and her friends. She'd to come back and walk through an aisle associated with an airport with a blanket over her head as an alternative to walking down the aisle which has a bride's veil. I think she's been punished enough."CBS News legal analyst Wendy Murphy, a former prosecutor, told Storm she will prosecute Wilbanks: "She caused a great deal of harm. When individuals do bad things and result in a lot of harm in society, they're supposed to be punished. I realize she deserves some sympathy too. She may have mental health problems, but that doesn't mean she gets a totally free pass."She not only cost taxpayers hundreds and hundreds of dollars, she diverted precious law enforcement officials resources, which means cops weren't on the market solving real crimes. And albeit, she caused her fiance quite a lot of scorn and suspicion. I needed the guy drawn and quartered. That is certainly her fault. no previous page next 1/2 Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman have won a reported six-figure sum in libel damages and a retraction from a London newspaper that alleged their marriage can be a sham and that Cruise is gay. CBS News Correspondent Kimberly Dozier reports from London."I don't take a lot of pleasure in even being forced to be here today. This is the final recourse against anyone who has printed vicious lies about me and our kids, and I intend to protect our kids," said Cruise.Britain's Express on Sunday newspaper claimed in a article last year that theirs would be a passionless marriage of convenience, inked either as a business arrangement in the behest of the Church of Scientology or as a cover for the couple's mutual interest in the same sex.It also claimed that Cruise was impotent or sterile and they also adopted their two children on impulse. The newspaper's attorney apologized and said the allegations were entirely false. The couple's lawyer, libel specialist George Carman, said the American media must take note. "They admitted that all those ideas are false now. It's enormously important since this should stop American publications from saying precisely the same kinds of things, because if they are doing it they will be doing it knowingly and that should allow us to stop it," said Carman. Despite rumors that have dogged them, Cruise and Kidman married because they love each other and their marriage is really a close and happy one, their attorney said. Cruise said it is precisely what the legal case was about. "It is certainly not about the money. Although we received a very substantial sum, every single penny, pound we received go to various charities,"says Cruise. For the media, both here as well as in the U.S., this is about the money. They will likely think twice about how much repeating this story is worth to them.Reported by CBS News Correspondent Kimberly Dozier black leather ugg boots Within a carefully worded address, Mr. Bush offered up an agreement solution to a complex political and moral issue. Authorities have refused to express on what grounds they were being held.According to testimony from two of the Dutch boy's Surinamese friends, they brought 18-year-old Natalee Holloway to Arashi beach, on the northern tip of the island, but they didn't get out of the car. Instead, Holloway as well as the Dutch teen, a 17-year-old honors student at Aruba International School, "were from the back seat kissing" in an intimate embrace, the Surinamese brothers said, in accordance with testimony given to police. The testimony was reviewed from the court-appointed lawyer for one of two former hotel security officers being held in the case.CBS News Correspondent Kelly Cobiella reports that most four left the bar at 1:30 each day. The young men told police they took a 15 minute drive for the lighthouse on the northern end with the island and then dropped off Holloway at her hotel at 2:00 a.m. However, not just a single frame of security video in the Holiday Inn shows her ever coming back.Holloway disappeared May 30 while on a five-day trip with 124 classmates and 7 chaperones celebrating their graduation from Mountain Brook Secondary school, near Birmingham. Police found her U.S. passport and packed bags in their hotel room.Aruban police, Dutch Marines and countless volunteers continued island-wide searches, but Trapenberg said there is "absolutely no new information" Friday. The brothers told police the young woman was drunk and refused to get out of the car when asked to, said Noraina Pietersz, who's representing 30-year-old Nick John, an old security guard arrested Sunday. no previous page next 1/2 ugg bailey boots Wearing the proper shoe is also important in preventing injuries.
